Privacy Policy

Last updated: 22 September 2026

Your privacy matters. This Privacy Policy explains what personal information may be collected when you visit The Little Invert, how I use that information, and the choices and rights available to you.

The Little Invert can be found at thelittleinvert.com.

Who I am

The Little Invert is an independently operated website owned and managed by JENNIFER DIXON.

Throughout this Privacy Policy, “I”, “me” and “my” refer to the person responsible for operating The Little Invert.

The website shares information, observations, photographs and other content relating to pet invertebrates and rescued feeder insects.

For privacy-related questions or requests, you can contact me at:
Email: thelittleinvert@gmail.com

Information I may collect

Most of The Little Invert can be browsed without providing personal information.

However, I may collect information when you choose to interact with the website. Depending on how you use the site, this may include your:

  • Name
  • Email address
  • IP address
  • Browser and device information
  • Information contained in messages you send to me
  • Comments you submit
  • Technical information relating to your visit

Some technical information may also be collected automatically by the website, hosting provider or security services in order to operate and protect the site.

I do not intentionally collect special category personal data and ask that you do not send sensitive personal information unless it is genuinely necessary.

How and why I use personal information

I only use personal information where there is an appropriate reason to do so.

This may include:

  • Operating and maintaining the website
  • Responding to enquiries
  • Managing comments
  • Protecting the website from spam and malicious activity
  • Diagnosing technical problems
  • Maintaining backups
  • Understanding how the site is being used
  • Complying with legal obligations

Depending on the circumstances, the lawful basis for processing information may include legitimate interests, consent, legal obligation, or another lawful basis permitted under UK data protection law.

Where I rely on legitimate interests, those interests may include operating an informative website, communicating with visitors, maintaining website security, preventing abuse and improving the site and its content.

Where processing relies on your consent, you can withdraw that consent at any time.

Comments

If you leave a comment on The Little Invert, information entered into the comment form may be collected along with your IP address and browser user-agent information. This helps with comment management, security and spam detection.

Your comment and the name you choose to provide may be displayed publicly on the website.

Your email address will not be displayed publicly as part of your comment.

Comments are moderated and may be withheld or removed where necessary, including where they contain spam, abusive material, personal information that should not be public, or content unrelated to the discussion.

If you choose the option to save your details for future comments, cookies may be stored on your device so that you do not need to re-enter the same information the next time you comment.

Gravatar and profile images

The Little Invert may display avatars through Gravatar, a service operated by Automattic.

When you leave a comment, an anonymised string created from your email address may be provided to Gravatar to determine whether you have an associated profile image.

If you use Gravatar, your interaction with that service is also subject to its own privacy practices.

Visitors without a Gravatar may be shown a default avatar instead.

Contacting me

If you contact me by email or through a contact form, I may receive information including your name, email address and anything you include in your message.

I use this information to read and respond to your enquiry and, where necessary, to maintain an appropriate record of correspondence.

Please avoid sending confidential or highly sensitive personal information unless it is necessary.

Cookies and similar technologies

The Little Invert may use cookies and similar technologies to provide website functionality, remember choices, protect the site and, where enabled, understand how visitors use the website.

Some cookies are necessary for the website to function or remain secure. Others may require your consent.

Where required, non-essential cookies will only be used after appropriate consent has been obtained.

For example, visitors who leave comments may choose to allow cookies that remember their name and email address for convenience.

If analytics, advertising or other non-essential tracking technologies are introduced, information about those technologies and the available choices will be provided through the website’s cookie information and consent controls.

You can also control or delete cookies through your browser settings, although disabling certain cookies may affect how some website features work.

Analytics

The Little Invert may use website analytics to understand information such as which pages are visited, how visitors reach the site, general traffic patterns and how the website is used.

Where an analytics service requires consent under applicable privacy rules, it will be used subject to the appropriate consent controls.

Analytics information is used to understand and improve the website rather than to identify individual visitors unnecessarily.

Website security

I take reasonable steps to protect The Little Invert and the personal information processed through it.

The website currently uses Wordfence for security. Security systems may process technical information such as:

  • IP addresses
  • Requested URLs
  • Browser information
  • Information about attempted logins
  • Potentially malicious activity

This information may be used to identify suspicious behaviour, block attacks, prevent unauthorised access and investigate security incidents.

Security logs are retained only for as long as reasonably necessary for those purposes or according to the retention settings of the security systems being used.

No website or internet transmission can be guaranteed to be completely secure, but I take reasonable steps to reduce avoidable risks.

Website hosting

The Little Invert is hosted using Bluehost.

As part of providing website hosting and related infrastructure, the hosting provider may process technical information necessary to deliver the website, maintain its servers, provide security and diagnose technical problems.

Hosting providers may maintain their own system logs and backups in accordance with their own policies and legal obligations.

Backups

Backups of The Little Invert are created to protect the website against accidental loss, technical problems, corruption or security incidents.

The website currently uses UpdraftPlus as part of its backup process. Backup copies may also be stored separately from the live website.

Because backups are historical copies, information removed from the live website may remain temporarily within an existing backup until that backup is replaced or deleted through the normal backup cycle.

Backups are used for website recovery and security purposes, not for unrelated processing.

Third-party services

To operate The Little Invert, I may use trusted third-party services that process limited information on my behalf or provide necessary website functionality.

These may include:

  • Hosting providers
  • Security providers
  • Backup services
  • Email providers
  • Avatar services
  • Analytics providers
  • Other technical service providers

Personal information is only shared where reasonably necessary for the service being provided, to comply with the law, to protect the website or its visitors, or where you have otherwise authorised the sharing.

I do not sell your personal information.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on The Little Invert may contain embedded content such as videos, photographs, social-media posts or other media.

Embedded content from another website can behave in much the same way as if you had visited that third-party website directly.

Those websites may collect information about you, use cookies or similar technologies, include additional third-party tracking and monitor your interaction with the embedded content.

Their use of information is controlled by their own privacy policies rather than this Privacy Policy.

External links

The Little Invert may contain links to other websites.

I am not responsible for the privacy practices, security or content of external websites.

If you follow an external link, you should review the privacy information provided by that website.

International transfers

Some service providers used to operate The Little Invert may process or store information outside the United Kingdom.

Where personal data is transferred internationally, appropriate safeguards should be used by the organisations responsible for those transfers in accordance with applicable data protection law.

The exact location and safeguards may vary depending on the service provider involved.

How long I keep information

I do not keep personal information for longer than reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected.

Comments may remain on the website while the relevant content remains published unless there is a reason to remove them.

Correspondence and enquiries may be retained for a reasonable period after the last communication where this is useful for maintaining records, responding to follow-up questions or resolving a dispute.

Security and technical records are retained according to operational and security requirements.

Backup copies are retained according to the site’s backup cycle and may therefore contain older information for a limited period after it has been removed from the live website.

Where information is required for legal, accounting, security or dispute-resolution purposes, it may be retained for longer where reasonably necessary.

Your data protection rights

Depending on the circumstances and the lawful basis being used, UK data protection law may give you rights including:

  • The right to access personal information held about you
  • The right to correct inaccurate or incomplete information
  • The right to request deletion of personal information in certain circumstances
  • The right to restrict processing in certain circumstances
  • The right to object to certain uses of your personal information
  • The right to data portability where applicable
  • The right to withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent

Not every right applies in every situation.

To make a request concerning your personal information, contact me at thelittleinvert@gmail.com.

I may need to request enough information to confirm your identity before responding to certain requests.

Your right to object

You have the right to object to certain processing of your personal information where I rely on legitimate interests.

If you object, I will consider the circumstances and whether there are compelling legitimate grounds for continuing the processing.

Automated decision-making

The Little Invert does not currently use automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects on visitors.

If this changes, I will update this Privacy Policy accordingly.

Complaints

If you have concerns about how your personal information has been handled, please contact me first, so I have the opportunity to investigate.

You also have the right to raise a concern with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s data protection regulator.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

I may update this Privacy Policy from time to time as The Little Invert develops, new website features are introduced, service providers change or legal requirements are updated.

The date at the top of this page will be updated whenever a significant change is made.

Visitors are encouraged to review this page periodically.
